Transcend

We have all experienced something quite unprecedented with COVID-19 and lockdown. Many of us were forced to look more inwardly and one way or another, inspired a spiritual re-awakening.

It has been said that one cannot get to the next level on their path without enduring hardships for this is what builds your character. As you rise, more challenges will come your way. What do you cling to? What do you centre yourself around in order not to lose the faith?

My personal journey inspired the theme around this garment: Spiritual Armour

Transform

We are not one thing, we are a collection of experiences, interactions and genetics. Likewise, this coat is a collection of pieces that work well on their own but stand out when put together. The Phetoho Coat can transform into 9 different looks, thanks to a series of zips and buttons.

It is made up of the following pieces: Collar, Cape, Crop Jacket, Skirt and two bracelets. These combine to allow for a minimum of 9 looks. A course on sustainable luxury by Plain Tiger shifted my focus to the functionality of a garment and its lifespan. A garment that can adapt to whatever style the season of your life is reflecting, is an item that can be treasured for a life time and passed on.

Transfer

Heritage is inheritance. Like Basotho blankets, the kobo capes and coats have become legacy pieces with mothers even passing on their capes to their daughters for graduation day. The truth about legacy is that it can feel overwhelming to walk in our predecessors’ footsteps. What is important is realising the vision, achieving the end goal. The path you take is not written in stone. Likewise, the Phetoho Overcoat creates one beautiful garment, but you can take it apart and put it back together and style it in a manner that best expresses who you are. These acts do not take away any value from the overall vision.

This garment is a reflection of what I have taken out of lockdown. A process that I have gone through that I hope will inspire and, once again, show that our heritage and culture still have a role to play in telling our stories for generations to come.
